I was going to watch Leverage, but Grimm turned out to be easier to find a torrent for, so hey, that's what I've been watching. I liked the first two episodes a lot.

The third, however, was about bees. And bee-people called Mellifers. And ARGH THE BEES WERE ALL WRONG AND BEES DO NOT WORK LIKE THAT. *cries for a while*

So yeah, I didn't really pay much attention to the plot of that ep, I was too busy cringing in horror :P But it's a fun show. I like Monroe especially, and the coroner is awesome. Although, she does appear to be the only woman in the entire police department, sooo.

Also, ohai Sam Adama. Nice to see you. Interesting career change, from assassin to police chief, but Portland is probably safer than Caprica City! Did you bring your husband with you?

ETA: "Notice the iris is fully dilated, nearly filling the eye completely." Um. That's the pupil, Coroner. Thanks for that.

ETA2: And that's not a toad. It's a frog.

Hmm! I was wary of Grimm because I'd given up on Supernatural a few seasons in, and it looked like Grimm might have a lot of the same problems with regards to women characters etc. (This isn't based on spoilers, just on what I know about the premise and the promo for the first episode, however.) If you're still enjoying it once you're a little farther in, I'll have to add it to my to-watch list! :D

I think the problem is more in the lack of women so far, rather than giving them the SPN treatment. I'm really hoping that Nick's girlfriend actually gets something to do soon. But the premise is cool, and I really like Monroe.

Based on your ETAs, they must have the same science consultant as Fringe. XD You'd think it wouldn't be too much effort to look things up on Wikipedia at the very least.

It was not just a frog, rather than a toad. It was a tropical forest tree frog. They tend not to be found on the ground in Portland XD

I have heard rumours about the science in Fringe :P

The lack of women is sort of ridiculous; it gets a little bit better as the season goes on, but not much. The women they do have are kickass, at least -- not necessarily in superhero ways, but in "these are competent, intelligent people who are good in a crisis, yay!" ways.

I found it helped a lot to be watching Once Upon a Time at the same time, which is pretty much entirely about the women; the men in that show are basically accessories. Who sometimes get fridged to push the women's stories forward.

But as for Grimm itself, I found that the series picked up a lot after four or five episodes, and it does all sorts of interesting things. It's a fun show.

I really love Parker, and wish she gets more to do. And Juliet is nice, even if most of her scenes purely have her making out with Nick... But yeah. The gender ratio in the show is a bit bizarre, even for TV! I'm mostly enjoying it, though - it definitely is interesting :)

Okay, I'm coming back to your comment having watched most of the season. I was going to wait until I got to the end, but I'm not sure I'll bother watching more, tbh.

I'm afraid my reaction is along the lines of 'meh' - I'm rather disappointed in it. It's not really anything the show's done so much as it just not bothering to do stuff like develop plots, develop its two named female characters (oh, and there's another named minor one who is evil with a side in love potions enabling the use of the consumed-with-animal-lust-black-guy trope), give minor women characters any agency in what are nominally their own stories... yeah, my main reaction is that the writers have no idea how to write women and are hoping no one notices.

Also, I'm really bored of watching Nick save hapless women-objects. Also bored of him angsting about how no one understaaaands his burdennnn, and also sulking about how his girlfriend (who still hasn't got to do anything, or developed a personality beyond 'nice') wants him to stop keeping secrets from him. Eh. I think I'll try something else.

Erg, I'm sorry to hear that, but thank you very much for coming back and telling me! Disappointingly, that kind of fits with my initial impression of the show ... at least it's not as bad as SPN, but I'm kind of over shows that can't do anything with their female characters. At the very least, I don't need to get into a new one, especially if it isn't redeemingly brilliant in other ways.

(I didn't watch the show, I just read hilarious reviews by fellow native speakers. Same reviewers said that that show is getting pretty interesting over the season.)

Any examples? Obviously the main premise (neuroscience does not work that way), but anything else you'd like to share? I haven't done biology in a long time, so I doubt I'm as aware of such things as you (it was one of my best A Level subjects, though, and I loved it. I feel a bit guilty about abandoning it).

The psychosomatic asthma in the first episode springs to mind immediately - there were a lot of other moments that made me facepalm while watching it. Especially every time they had medical stuff that was non-brain stuff, although medical stuff which looks shiny as is terrible is one of Whedon's hallmarks :P (And things like them being so pleased they'd cured Sierra's "schizophrenia", but not taking her out of doll state so that she could have a choice while able to understand what was going on were just, well. That's one of the subjects I'm very touchy on.)

I can't look on tvtropes, spoilers!! :P I shall after I've finished the season, I'm sure :)

I can't decide whether it's better or worse than SGA in biology fail. This has loads of really obvious things wrong, where SGA went for outrageously bizarre approximations of how genetics as a field works :P

I would volunteer wholeheartedly to be a researcher on any and all fantasy/sci-fi shows! :D

Grimm is awesome! I started watching a few weeks ago and marathoned the whole season in about a week and a half. As a person who not only works with bees, but does research with swarm behavior, I was cringing during the bee episode too. Forgive the writers, though, because the rest of the show is so awesome it more than makes up for the biology!fail.
