frith_in_thorns: Liu Sang crouched on a beach listening to the ground (LTR Liu Sang beach)
I normally do the RL version, but I keep stalling out on it. 2021 was pretty dreadful in lots of ways and there's not much I really want to say about it. I've done the fandom one, though - mostly I'm so delighted to be back in fandom, as it was a huge struggle to do anything creative for months and months after having Liongirl, and I was having visions of not having my writing brain back until she turned five or something.

Fandom questions for 2021 )
frith_in_thorns: Pangzi hugging Wu Xie (LTR Pang Xie pink)
June Fandom questions, via [personal profile] hils. As you can see, I did not do them day by day. I have no track record of ever completing things done like that! Here are a pile of them instead. I'll do half today and the second half when I next get to it.

Day 1: What's changed about your fandom life in the last 365 days?

WELL. I had a baby. That had a rather... damping effect XD I am literally only just managing to regain some of my writing focus. Also I really drifted away from being "in a fandom" for a while, but in the last couple of weeks I've finally really started feeling like part of a DMBJ community, which is lovely!

Day 2: You've got your OTP, you have to throw a third into the mix (from the same fandom), creating an OT3. Who is the OTP, and in your opinion, why would they make a perfect third for them? Bonus question: What about adding a third to your OTP from a different fandom? Who and why?

So currently I only have an OT3, the only way I am interested in ANY ship dynamic with the Iron Triangle is if they're all equally important. No writing off Pangzi, or saying "oh yes of course he's part of an OT3, but platonically"! (Tbh that viewpoint is hilarious to me because he's really the only one of the Iron Triangle I feel is actively very interested in sex.)

Day 3: What's a favorite, or at least memorable fandom meeting/interaction that you've had?

I still have a special fondness for the first NineWorlds where I went to the queer geek tea with great trepidation (I think it was queer? I really can't remember) and got rescued from my extreme shyness and not-knowing-anyone by [personal profile] raven, who introduced me to their whole collection of London friends who are still one of the most important parts of my twitter life to this day.

Day 4: What are the origins of your penname/username?

Frith is the name of the wood my parents' garden borders onto, and the road, and was part of the name of the first house I lived in (next to the same wood; we moved 2 miles down the road for the sake of a better garden when I was 6). It's also the god from Watership Down. It's also an Old English word meaning sanctuary. I had an earlier LJ called blackthorn_tree because I love them and because when I was little I looked exactly like the blackthorn fairy in the Flower Fairies books. So I kept the thorns part, not least because I was having a bit of a sad time when I made this username. Anyway, the "in thorns" part isn't so important to me, but I love being called Frith. I answer very happily to it IRL when people who know me from the internet call me it! (This is also useful as my first name is pretty common so there's usually at least another one.)

Day 5: Compare and/or contrast your very first fandom obsession and your very latest fandom obsession.

My first fandom, when I was 16, was CSI:NY, which I remember fondly for some reasons and very much not for others XD It's where I discovered hurt/comfort without knowing the word for it or realising that that was entirely what I was writing and reading. It was also a fandom that was misognynistic as hell, thankfully the people who were really into bashing the women didn't actually care about my fave (Stella) though, they were all about being shit to the women who got between their Danny/Don pairing. *eyeroll* Although... DMBJ doesn't really have women, certainly not non-fridged ones *more eyeroll* with the exception of Xiao-Bai, and she's in very few fics. I... should really do something about that.

Anyway, the intervening years have mostly taught me exactly what hurt/comfort is and that reading and writing it is the vast majority of my fannish interest. Sometimes I feel embarrassed about this!

Day 6: What's a fandom that you wish had a bigger following?

Wolf 359! I'm still sad I never really managed to get any of my fandom writer friends into this while it was airing and the fandom was active. SUCH a good little show - it's an indie space audio drama, and if anyone wants to get into it now... *hopeful face*

Day 7: What's the longest time you've been in a fandom. Not necessarily your oldest fandom, but a fandom that you started and still continue to read/write/create content for in some way.

I guess maybe Vorkosigan? Which I read for the first time ten years ago, scarily enough (I know this because it was while I was on a Lake District walking holiday with Ellie where it was just us two and we were Totally Gen and sleeping snuggled together etc in camping barns in a very gen way and then continued to sleep in the same bed when we were back at her parents because we had a nice time! Anyway she got me to read Vorkosigan and I got her to read Codex Alera and we spent a large majority of the walking time excitedly discussing the bits we had each read the previous evening). It's never been a primary fandom, but it's something I dip in and out of, mainly to check whether anyone wrote any good Illyan fic since I last looked, and write for exchanges every now and then.

Day 8: Crack!fic - We all know it. What's your opinion of it, and if you want, show us an example.

Hmmmmm. I really like funny fic! A lot of what gets billed as "crackfic" though I don't really find funny, it just tries way too hard to be WACKY. Like, all the fics of characters being drunk which bear no resemblance to how anyone has ever been while drunk in the history of the world.

Day 9: Drop the cast of a fandom you follow into a reality tv show - who/what/why?

I'd say this wouldn't work for most of the fandoms I've been in because the characters are too serious/competent. Fortunately, DMBJ absolutely does not have that problem! While I think it would be very very hard to write it without falling into the issues of crackfic as above, I reckon you could put the DMBJ cast in pretty much any reality show and it would be hilarious. Also, whichever you chose, from Bake-Off to I'm A Celebrity to Love Island, you'd have Pangzi throwing himself into 100% engagement with the premise and having an amazing time, Wu Xie going between totally baffled and outright cheating, and Xiaoge just being Xiaoge in the corner as hard as he possibly could.

Day 10: Drop your OTP or small ensemble from the fandom they're in into another fandom - how do they do?

Again, I would love to watch the Tomb Idiots smash their way through literally any other canon. Although, in a taking-it-seriously way, I was involved the other day in the discord in hashing out a whole Old Kingdom AU for DMBJ and I am now super invested in it! I am not saying I'll write it. But it had Liu Sang as the Abhorsen, Xiao-Bai as one of the Clayr, Pangzi as an extremely disreputable border guard with lots of sus jobs in his past who turns out to be a surprise Wallmaker, and Wu Xie as a scholar from Ancelstierre with Old Kingdom heritage who goes poking around the Clayr library and stumbles upon a lost Abhorsen from generations back, Zhang Qiling...

Fandom meme from [personal profile] naye!

Name: [personal profile] frith_in_thorns

Fandoms: Guardian and Tomb Nonsense are my current fandoms.

Where you post: AO3 these days. I usually remember to link on twitter. These days I don't so much remember to link on here, honestly - I should maybe do that more? Does anyone rely on that?

Most popular multi-chapter fic: I had to go to my stats page to have a look, and I'm slightly surprised that by kudos it's Silence Sharp as Blades, a 3-chapter Guardian fic. I think in relative terms, We're not pure of heart, but we're sure of aim (Wolf 359) deserves a mention as it did really well for being in a tiny fandom.

Favorite story you’ve written so far: The answer to this question is usually the most recent long fic I wrote. In this case it's The Cloudfarers, which I do believe is objectively pretty good!

Fic you were nervous to post: Haaaaaa, that's what anon posting is for ;) Ok, so probably Consent (which did in fact initially post anon) and Goblin Fruit, which is still very much wtf did I write there.

How you choose your titles: Either I choose like one word which kinda matches the fic or I go to my scriv page which is song lyrics that have good title potential and use one of those. Very occasionally I think of an actually good title on my own.

Do you outline: Nope. I start at the beginning and work my way through to the end. I like to throw in cliffhangers to keep myself motivated and trust I'll be able to write myself out of the hole...

Complete: Lots

In progress: I have a couple of Guardian and Lost Tomb fics which have about 600 words each. Will they progress? Who knows...

Coming soon/not yet started: Is not the universe made of these

Do you accept prompts: Always! Sometimes it takes me months to get to them, but I always genuinely love receiving them, and writing for other people!

Upcoming story you are most excited to write: More sky pirates? I don't really have a plot yet, but I re-read Fionavar and that made me remember how much I love the extremely niche trope of tree sacrifices. Which I think could work really well.

Tagging: I think lots of my tags are hilarious. But then I often think I'm hilarious in general. Audience perception may differ.

I've seen the December meme going around again, where people give you a topic to write about. Since I want to make more posts but have a complete dearth of inspiration for what to actually say, I thought I might as well give it a go. So, ask me anything in the comments which you would be interested in seeing a post on! (Disclaimer: I set no post minimum.)

Topics which I know a fair amount and/or have misplaced confidence in my ability to talk about: knitting (you need to ask a specific question here if you want to ask about knitting, this is a subject in which I do count myself as expert and it's an extremely broad topic), crochet, autism, teaching, teaching children with disabilities, various fandoms, DIY, very amateur gardening, baking, wrapping presents with no sellotape, things babies like doing, adventures in babywearing and cloth nappies, how much I hate sewing but do it anyway, video games I had time to play in pre-baby life, writing, indoor bunnies.

But, you know, you're welcome to ask my thoughts on anything and I shall do my best!
frith_in_thorns: (Default)
I posted chapter 3 of All the Boundaries Between the other day! If you were wondering at what point this fic would start devolving into h/c, it is at this point.

Currently I am procrastinating on editing chapter 4 (which goes up tomorrow), so here's a meme I saw from [personal profile] naye.

1. Why did you start writing fanfic?
2. Why do you write fanfic?
3. How do you choose fandoms and why do you choose them?
4. Do you have themes or plot devices you return to?
5. Do you have any pet peeves?
6. Which story/stories are you the most proud of and why?

My answers below the cut )
frith_in_thorns: (GD WeiLan bed)
[personal profile] tassosss made a 30 days of Guardian meme! Since I have been talking about Guardian nonstop for way more than 30 days so far, let's see if I can do it in a structured way. You can find their original list here. I made a couple of changes (4, 5, 10, 11, 18, 19).

Day 1: Favourite episode

I'm glad there will be lots of chances to talk about specific favourite moments later, but for favourite entire episode I'm going to pick episode 8. Which was the episode when I fell utterly and deeply in love with the show. Also it is consistently great the entire way through.

The episode title, btw, is "Zhao Yunlan fails at impressing Shen Wei with antique books". Yes. Yes, he did. So much fail. I was screeching out loud watching this and wailing "oh nooooooo", especially when Shen Wei just... walks off. AND ALSO this is then the episode where Shen Wei first has a fight with Zhu Jiu and then rescues an unwell Zhao Yunlan and brings him home and tucks him into bed and then cleans his apartment and it's generally the episode of him realising in despair what a disaster he has fallen in love with. IT'S ALL SO GREAT. Also I just watched all these scenes, for research, and I adore Zhao Yunlan flirting so utterly shamelessly after he wakes up and finds Shen Wei in his apartment. "If you keep on rejecting me it'll be my life's greatest failure!"

Stats meme going round, copied from [personal profile] glinda. I've actually been playing around with my AO3 stats page recently as I've actually been posting a lot of stuff again. (Did you know I have written over 300,000 words for White Collar, mostly in <5k fics? Because I very much DID NOT.)

The meme was: what's your top fic sorted by kudos for each year you've been on AO3? I've expanded it because it occurred to me it would also be interesting to compare to least-kudos'd fics, especially since they tend to be tiny fandom ones. In many cases therefore they're ones which I wrote because I found them really interesting, so I enjoyed looking them up and thinking about them again, and have quite a lot more to say about them in most cases than the more popular ones! (Like, if you wanted to check any of the fics on this list out I'd generally point you towards these.)

2010 - 2019, most and least kudos )
frith_in_thorns: Hardcover books standing upright (.Books)
A book meme! I love round-up memes and had also been vaguely meaning to write up my book-reading, so I immediately copied this from [personal profile] naye.

How many books read in 2016?
86 books -- this is my log. 70 were new-to-me and 16 were re-reads.

Fiction/Non-Fiction ratio?
Nonfiction: 1 1/2 (I started a book about geopolitics in early November. WHY, you ask. I asked myself this, and put it aside to finish when it's less depressing.)
Fiction: 85

Male/Female authors?
male: 27 (this is skewed by the fact that one third of these books were the same author)
female: 57
other: 2

Most books read by one author this year?
I read nine books by Adrian Tchaikovsky, since I started a re-read in December of his 10-book (excellent!) Shadows of the Apt series. Also he published like three things this year, what the hell dude.

Any in translation?
Nope

Favorite?
Not counting re-reads, because I am utterly unobjective about books I like enough to have read more than twice, it was probably The Fifth Season by N.K. Jemison, which was just mind-bending.
Runner ups up include A Gathering of Shadows by V.E. Schwabe, with was DELIGHTFUL, and Ninefox Gambit by Yoon Ha Lee. And shoutout to Goldenhand by Garth Nix because LIREAL.

Least Favorite?
Gilded Cage by Vic James, which is an utterly offensive piece of rubbish. (You want my review?
Runners up were The Traitor Baru Cormorant, which was also infuriatingly offensive and also boring, and The Boy with the Porcelain Blade which was just stupid.

Oldest?
Hexwood, Diana Wynne Jones (1993)

Newest?
I read several books on their release day, but the most recent of those was The Burning Page, Genevieve Cogman (late December 2016)

Longest Title?
The Land of the Green Man: A Journey through the Supernatural Landscapes of the British Isles, Carolyne Larrington

Shortest Title?
Nimona, Noelle Stevenson

Book that most changed my perspective:
Well, World War Z made me realise that I'm actually sick of zombies? And I found There's a Boy in the Girls' Bathroom really insightful (title associated trans issues for me but it's about being the "problem boy" in a ~yr 5 class)

Favorite character:
Mulaghesh from City of Blades. I didn't like the first book that much, but this one was about a different character and WOW I LOVE HER. She's a disillusioned, ex-General and life-long soldier who's being forced to help out in a political mess in a hostile colony before she's allowed to retire. And I just fell in love. (Sadly the third book is about a dude I don't care much about, so ugh.)

Favorite scene:
I have read Bitterblue several times now, and the last few chapters in particular are just so important to me.

Favorite quote:
I read most of these books on kindle; sadly I don't have time to skim for quotes!

What do you want to read in 2017?
These ones which I'm too lazy to type out, books already on my kindle, more good fantasy, the continuations of all the series I'm partway through...

Any recs?
frith_in_thorns: (DW Rise)
Now that I'm back from holiday in the wild reaches of the Cotswolds (well, kind of excessively civilised really) and about to head off to a New Year party, let's do this!

2016 )
frith_in_thorns: (SW Leia)
1. Your main fandom of the year?

I haven't really done fandom as such. I think Star Wars and Star Trek between them have taken the majority of my actively-thinking-about-fandoms time.

2. Your favourite film watched this year?

For once this is a hard question because I've actually seen quite a few films, way more than usual! But I think it has to be Moana, which was glorious.

3. Your favourite book read this year?

I loved The Fifth Season, rather to my surprise, and the sequel. (I had not got on with Jemisen's books previously.) Also Ninefox Gambit was really good. I read lots more that were really good too.

4. Your favourite TV show of the year?

Star Trek DS9! I finally got around to watching it, after a long time of certain friends talking about it incessently, and it deserved the hype :)

5. Your favourite online fandom community of the year?

Twitter and the lovely crowd there, aka the Julian Bashir Face Appreciation Society.

6. Your best new fandom discovery of the year?

DS9! It was SO GOOD and everyone in it is SO GREAT.

7. Your biggest fandom disappointment of the year?

I hated the new Newsflesh book, which was a real shame. Also hated how tumblr fandom fell into Bernie-cult.

8. Your TV boyfriend of the year?

Julian Bashir, who is a darling.

9. Your TV girlfriend of the year?

Jadzia Dax :D

10. Your biggest squee moment of the year?

Finally getting Goldenhand, the Old Kingdom follow-up for Lireal, was wonderful!

11. The most missed of your old fandoms?

I don't really miss any fandom in particular anymore, but I do still really miss just being in a fandom -- just the socialness of it and the endless positive feedback loop that being a minor BNF ficwriter always gave me. (I know it's terribly gauche to admit, but I write so intensly for readers that even when I was churning out fic like 50% of it was directly from prompts that other people asked me to write, and the rest of it was written directly from me to my friends because I knew they'd like it. It's hard to describe, but I really fic-write as conversation. And without that, most of the drive is just... not really there.)

12. The fandom you haven't tried yet, but want to?

Not sure. I always feel I should try getting more into book fandoms, but I am just not so keen on reading fic about books. There's a sort of uncanny valley for me in regards to the authorial voice.

13. Your biggest fan anticipations for the New Year?

Mass Effect Andromeda and Sunless Skies! Also the next Star Wars. And Jemisen's next book. And more Toby Daye.

Meme I took from [livejournal.com profile] pooh_collector:

Everyone should post their ten most CRUCIAL CRUCIAL CRUCIAL-ASS movies, like the movies that explain everything about yourselves in your current incarnations (not necessarily your ten favorite movies but the ten movies that you, as a person existing currently, feel would help people get to know you) (they can change later on obviously).

In no particular order:

1. Pan's Labyrinth

2. Howl's Moving Castle

3. Catching Fire

4. Pacific Rim

5. Star Wars: The Phantom Menace

6. The Lord of the Rings (if I have to pick one I choose The Two Towers)

7. V for Vendetta

8. Cold Mountain

9. Serenity

10. Alice Through the Looking Glass (1998 British TV movie version)

I will expand on why I picked any of these in comments if anyone's at all interested!

Day 10 - A song that makes you fall asleep
All Good Things (Come To An End) — Nelly Futardo

I just really love this one. It's had a lot of repeat plays. This is one I used to have on loop to work/revise to in sixth form, actually, because it's nice relaxing noise.

Day 11 - A song from your favourite band
Speed the Collapse — Metric

This was a really hard question to answer -- I have quite a lot of bands I love! But I haven't used a Metric song for any of my other meme answers, so I'll go with them. This is also one of my favourite apocalypse songs. (I have a lot of favourite apocalypse songs.)

Day 12 - A song from a band you hate
A Light As Bright As Ours — Sandi Thom

Yeah, this is the "I wish I was a punk rocker" singer. Which is one of the most annoying songs I know XD But this one is okay! Although I have no idea why I have it in my music collection -- I think may be one my sister added way back when she used to steal my laptop...

Day 07 - A song that reminds you of a certain event
Bow to the Crown — Heather Dale

I listened to Heather Dale a lot right before my Finals. (She's good listening on the way to job interviews, too!) For people unfamiliar with her she is a member of the Society for Creative Anachronism, and that's what her songs are. Medieval style, with chivalry and quests but also lady knights and magic and all these stories about fictional places which are basically out of ren-faires or Merlin or something. And they're delightful.

This particular one is about knights fighting in a tournament. (Deliberately, there are no genders attached to either the knights or their sweethearts, which I think is a lovely touch.) It was great pre-Finals music to listen to!

Day 08 - A song that you know all the words to
Piazza, New York Catcher — Belle & Sebastian

This question was a bit tricky to answer -- I just automatically pick up and memorise song lyrics, and therefore I know pretty much all the lyrics to all my songs. But I really like this one, and it's a fun song to sing along to!

Day 09 - A song that you can dance to
Never Look Away — Vienna Teng

This is my favourite song from her newest album. And it's so great! you are made of nebulas and novas and night sky / you’re made of memories you bury or live by I also think this would make a great vid song -- I want to make a Warehouse 13 team vid to it.

Unrelated note: I've had to turn off anon commenting on LJ. I've been getting an enormous volume of spam, about one an hour! They're currently enabled on DW -- I'll see how this goes.

Day 04 - A song that makes you sad
Samson — Regina Spektor

This is one of the songs which no one will ever convince me is not about lesbians, because it totally is. (Note: please don't actually try to convince me.) Also I've spent the last year planning in my head how I want to do a Myka/HG vid to it, and definitely plan to make it after Warehouse 13 finishes airing.

I love the sweetness about this song, and the sadness. It's got beautiful lyrics. We couldn't bring the columns down, no we couldn't destroy a single one / and the history books forgot about us and the bible didn't mention us, not even once.

Day 05 - A song that reminds you of someone
Pressure Suit — Aqualung

This is song which I was given by Esvan, during the period of my life when I was in 6th form and had literally no one to talk to (and he was in his first year of uni) and I was just incredibly lonely and depressed and suicidal. But he sent me a song and I played it over and over and over and just. It's such a good song. Somewhere far beneath your pointed tongue and teeth is where you really are and just the repeated it's alright was so much what I needed right then, and yeah. Esvan's song. ♥

Dammit, now I'm crying.

youtube )

lyrics )

Day 06 - A song that reminds of you of somewhere
Fire And Rain — James Taylor

Years ago, we went on holiday each summer to France, to the Alps and to the south. We'd drive there, and go between campsites which were all in the middle of nowhere, with all the camping stuff for three weeks wedged into one car (because apparently it cost a load to take the little trailer on the ferry). But basically there was a lot of driving. And we'd all make one or two mixtapes each to be played in the car (except my mother, who was too busy actually organising the holiday). My sister's tapes were universally hated by everyone else, being comprised of Atomic Kitten and the Sugarbabes and the like. Mine were bizarre mixtures with Steeleye Span wedged up next to Snow Patrol and the end-songs from LOTR and Death Cab for Cutie and Cat Stevens in a way that I thought was great. And dad's tended to be made of the exact same songs every year, even though he made new ones every time. (This meant that I never had to put them on mine unless I wanted a duplicate, which worked great for me!)

So this song is France. There are actually lots that are, the ones that dad repeated every year -- James Taylor and Neal Young and Carol King and other artists I can't remember although I could still sing you their songs. But I picked this one here because it's a specific place to me -- driving through a golden evening on a high, narrow road above a long reservoir that we'd spent all day beside. Cork oaks beside the road, all glowing gold in the sunset. That's this song.

I have started 30-day memes in the past and never finished them. This may happen here, but I'm hoping not. And I can actually ramble on about songs for a surprisingly long time!

Also I'm doing three questions at once. That might help too.

Day 01 - Your favourite song
King And Lionheart — Of Monsters And Men

This has been my favourite song since pretty much the first time I heard it. It's good to listen to in all moods -- happiness, sadness, depression... Many of my favourites songs are ones where the lyrics are along the lines of "yeah, things are shit, but you can go on", and this is a prime example. Howling ghosts they reappear in mountains that are stacked with fear, but you're a king and I'm a lionheart. It's just lovely the whole way through.

Also the official video is gorgeous. (I recommend viewing HD and fullscreen.)

youtube vid )

lyrics )

Day 02 - Your least favourite song
Blood — My Chemical Romance

There is a very simple reason why this is my least favourite song. When my sister was in her emo years she realised that I wasn't a fan of MCR and found this song rather annoying. So she put her speakers against our dividing wall and played it very loudly. For hours. And hours. And hours.

youtube vid )

lyrics )

Day 03 - A song that makes you happy
Wicked Girls — Seanan McGuire

(I can't find a youtube embed of this song, so I uploaded it to my tumblr. You can play it here.)

This is the song I'd been wanting for all of my life without knowing it. Especially as I grew increasingly dissatisfied with the fates of the girls in the books I'd read since I was a child. (Then of course I got into sci-fi and computer gaming... :P) This is a song about how we deserve better stories, and it's beautiful.

It's also another example of songs I find very motivational when I'm massively down. Our roads may be golden or broken or lost, but we'll walk on them willingly knowing the cost ... We're wicked girls saving ourselves.
