End of year meme, real life edition
1. What did you do in 2020 that you'd never done before?
Had a baby!
2. Did you keep your new year's resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
I don't think I actually made any last year, other than the perennial hope that I'd magically discover executive function and organisation. This year I got a ukulele for Christmas so I resolve to learn to play it.
3. Did anyone close to you give birth?
Meeeeee :D And obviously everyone else in my antenatal group. (They are nice people! There is one I'm pretty sure I could drag into fandom, except she's moving to York in a few months sadly.)
4. Did anyone close to you die?
My Nana died right at the end of last year. I still haven't sorted out any of my feelings around her — we weren't close — and I wasn't able to make her funeral between illness and not being able to make it up to Liverpool and back within one midweek day.
5. What countries did you visit?
We were going to have a boat holiday in the Mediterranean, but obviously did not.
6. What would you like to have in 2021 that you lacked in 2020?
Less crushing sense of dread
7. What date from 2020 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?
Obviously the 1st/2nd August, because of the whole labour and birth thing.
8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?
Being a cover artist for Iona Datt Sharma's Consolation Songs anthology
9. What was your biggest failure?
I really wish I'd done better at being there for my pupils remotely during lockdown.
10. Did you suffer illness or injury?
Hahahaha I was so incredibly ill all though my pregnancy, and actually I didn't realise quite how ill I'd been until it was over, since I was really trying to push through it.
11. What was the best thing you bought?
My new laptop? Although that was a birthday present so I'm not sure it counts.
12. Whose behaviour merited celebration?
Ellie, who looked after me so much.
13. Whose behaviour made you appalled and depressed?
Politicians and some people on the internet. Also my school leadership team, for non-covid reasons
14. Where did most of your money go?
On baby things.
15. What did you get really, really, really excited about?
The rare times I got to see friends in person. Also baby but it feels too obvious to keep putting her as an answer!
16. What song will always remind you of 2020?
I didn't really listen to very much music. Oh, I know! We keep singing "In the jungle" to Liongirl at bedtime because it amuses us. So that one.
17. Compared to this time last year, are you:
i. Happier or sadder?
Way happier
ii. Thinner or fatter?
Thinner, still trying to regain all the weight I lost in pregnancy
iii. Richer or poorer?
Poorer, mat pay is very small :(
18. What do you wish you'd done more of?
Reading, art things
19. What do you wish you'd done less of?
Procrastinating. Always that one. I have so much less time to myself now and I keep failing at maximising it
20. How did you spend Christmas?
At home with Ellie and Liongirl and our local friend who lives by herself (we are her support bubble). It was somewhat overwhelming for Liongirl but we all had a lovely time
21. Did you fall in love in 2020?
Baby <3
22. How many one-night stands?
Oh, hundreds
23. What was your favourite TV program?
Lost Tomb Reboot. Although Lost Tomb Ultimate Note is creeping up there. They are SO STUPID and yet SO ADDICTIVE, I love them xD
24. Do you hate anyone now that you didn't hate this time last year?
Of course! I keep my grudges forever
25. What was the best book you read?
I don't know how I'm expected to remember things in These Times
26. What was your greatest musical discovery?
Ummmmm.
27. What did you want and get?
A genuinely good birth experience and a bloody fantastic baby. Also some really nice Christmas pyjamas.
28. What did you want and not get?
Time with friends and family
29. What was your favourite film of this year?
Hamilton? Does that count if I'd already seen the stage show?
30. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?
If we'd been able to follow the original plan of Ellie having passed her driving test and getting a car pre-baby. As it was, she was close to taking her test when lockdown hit, and since then we haven't felt it's safe to restart lessons. That's made a lot of things way more difficult than they needed to be.
31. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?
I was 30. I wanted to have a big party, but as it was in early March, that didn't end up happening… first because I hadn't organised anything ahead of time, and then with the whole lockdown situation. The weekend before my birthday my parents came up and we had a pub lunch, though, which was the last time I got to eat out inside a place. So that was nice.
33. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2020?
Pyjamas
34. What kept you sane?
Twitter, honestly.
35. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?
Zhu Yilong
36. What political issue stirred you the most?
…ugh
37. Who did you miss?
Everyone
38. Who was the best new person you met?
The people in my antenatal group
39. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2020:
I'm really, really good at being a mum, and definitely made the right choice here
40. Quote a song lyric that sums up your year:
This is why, this is why we crank the dial to the right
This is why we bite the bullet, we know the kids are right
