I know I literally just got a gen_bingo card, but I can't ignore hc_bingo! So here it is.

I'm... hmm. It's not bad, but I'm not hugely enthusiastic. Although that might just because I got that bloody soulbonding square yet again.

I could do a lot of these for Simon Illyan though :P

It's a very Barrayaran card: archaic medical treatment, culture shock, hostile climate, illegal activities, undeserved reputations (very Aral square, but perhaps that's too obvious), mercy killing, time bombs... lots of Vorkosigan fic potential :-D

That is very true :D I think my initial negativity really is just that I've had that particular soulbonding square like 4/5 years and I hate it XD (but I never veto it because I'm always like "well, what are the odds I get it AGAIN??") I really like looking at the whole thing from a Barrayaran perspective. I mean, if I expand across the whole series, pretty much everything on there happens in canon!

Also I'm glad you commented because I've been thinking recently about how having the chip might affected Simon's sense of time passing (this was sparked by a line in one I was re-reading, the one where Aral basically played back his chip-memory and he was able to accurately give times for how long everything lasted), and therefore post-Memory whether he might then have issues being stuck with "normal" unreliable perception of time passing. I haven't yet thought of any particular fic scenarios to use this in, but I just wanted to share it! (Although I have read basically no meta so possibly everyone else already had this idea :P)

I think you might have to write the soulbonding one, to make it go away ;-). Perhaps an AU where the memory chip was an experimental variant on the Jeeves thing they do on Jackson's Whole, or the telepathy thing, to make Illyan a perfectly loyal soldier because he is so psychically connected to his Emperor. Only it doesn't work like that and Illyan ends up trapped and bonded to a dying Emperor, fated to go through Ezar's final illness with him and die with him, until Aral and Cordelia come up with a way to save him which leaves him sort of half-bonded to Aral.... IDK, I'm a bit sleep-deprived right now, you can probably come up with a better plot.

I think the post-Memory adjusting to not having the chip is wide open for fic, really. The time thing makes a lot of sense. There must be so many things that he hasn't had to do for thirty years, all showing up at once to bite him.

lol. That's such a totally WTF square, though. Soulbonding, okay, that's one thing. I know how to write that, even though it's not one of my preferred tropes. (I'm actually kinda-sorta writing it right now.) But "unexpected consequences of planned soulbonding" ... I DON'T EVEN KNOW WHERE TO START WITH THAT.

I've just gone back and checked and this is the third time I've had that "unexpected consequences of planned soulbonding" square, the odds are clearly not in my favour!

Philo pointed out above that it's a very Barrayar card, though, which has made me feel much better about it. Also it's very pretty this year.

That is a very good point. :D And yeah, I love the look of the card this year! I need to post mine. I'm feeling kind of "meh" about mine as well, though it does have some good squares - and one hilariously appropriate one. I got "alien abduction" this time, which would have been terribly difficult ... before I got into a fandom in which literally everything that happens is kicked off by the main character being abducted by aliens. So that's gonna be pretty easy. :D
