I actually feel much better about this show since discovering one particular corner of the fandom. Well, not about the fail, but about everything as a whole, if you know what I mean. sherlockbbc_fic  is a kink meme where the actual kink is vastly outweighed by the h/c and the crack, and people are actually writing the female characters, and going 'what if this male character was a female' and random descents into roleplay, and pointing out the fail instead of brushing it under the rug (SGA fandom, I'm looking at you). Really, finding that this bit of the fandom at least does not consist of fail has made me happy. It's also made me write things.

Several things seem to be passing into fanon very quickly. Specifically, many many references to losing the game, and Anderson having a dinosaur fetish. Yeah, I have no idea...

(Also, I'm sorry I haven't been commenting on peoples' posts much. Will get round to that at some point. RL stuff on at the moment.)

This is why I love fandom. You know, sometimes. When I find the right places. Mixed feelings about the show but I'll give this a try, thanks :)

Oh yes, very mixed feelings about the show itself still. But I do like the spirit of it, and fandom is sometimes very good about going along with the spirit of something and not its portrayal.

I feel optomistic today, anyway :)

Maybe I saw the wrong thing first but this discussion about the wording of a rape prompt buying into rape culture? So much fail! ('this is a kink who cares about the wording, what if the person thinks rape is funny' WTF) So maybe I need to browse a bit more to find the good stuff.

Right, found it. I started on the most recent prompting post (post 3) and hadn't actually read the previous ones.

Oh dear, I am saddened now (I read all the discussion on the prompt post and on the discussion post the mods made for it). But it seems that a lot of people who think they have a god-given right to hurt other people have flounced off to a different meme. And I think the mods have come to about the only solution they could.

I feel quite bad about recommending this comm now in light of the pretty shitty discussion which went on - on the other hand, I can still recommend Post 3. Which I'm not going to venture out of into the previous posts now, but I do want to keep at least that one as a happy place...

I have no spoons for this. :(

Aww :( It's not your fault, I'll stick to post 3 for now :) It's hard to avoid all the fail, especially on LJ but the positive things (secondary characters developed, female characters developed, characters of colour developed, heterosexuality one of many sexualities, etc) outweigh the negative ones in general, which is why I still love fandom.

So sorry I made you stay up so late with my comment, I could have waited till today had I known you'd do that. <3

Don't worry, I'm usually up late! :)

I always think that the trick to fandom is finding a little corner where the fail is at least greatly minimised. Somehow I always end up in the (mostly) gen h/c corner... ;)
