frith_in_thorns: Unfortunately, you'll also all blow up. (Zundry - rainbow jelly)
Hello! This is mainly of use to people currently in Oxford. But I shall spam everyone with it anyway. Since I spend most of my LJ time spamming Ox-friends with fandom, it seems only fair :P

To copy the blurb I wrote for the Facebook event:

"On the week beginning 25th March, Exeter College is hosting the group Christian Concern to hold a conference. Christian Concern (http://www.christianconcern.com/) is anti-lgbtq rights, anti-Islam, and anti-choice.

We believe that these values have no place in Oxford and should not be implicitly supported by allowing the group to hold a conference here. Therefore we will be protesting on Turl Street, outside the conference, to make it clear that Oxford, and the student body, is absolutely opposed."

An article written for the Guardian about the situation is here.

So! I'm pretty sure I invited nearly all of you via FB, but this is another plug in case you'd forgotten. Come and join us, from 11 by the Missing Bean. We've not been allowed to know exactly when the people are arriving, so we'll potentially be there all afternoon, come and join us any time. Bring banners and stuff! (Don't bring glitterbombs, it's bad for the environment and we promised Exeter we wouldn't. Also we really don't want to be in trouble with the police.)

Also, in case it's unclear: This is in no way an anti-Christianity protest, many of the protesters identify as Christians. This is a protest against the hosting (and therefore implicit/implied support or at least lack-of-problem-with) a group with political pull which in the UK is one of the main campaigners against gay marriage, against abortion, against people who are non-Christian.

The LGBTQ campaign had a banner-painting picnic this afternoon in the parks, some photos are below the cut for your entertainment. I'm the one with the dinosaur t-shirt and the extremely frizzy hair, if you wanted to know. Also the one who's signs look like they were made by a 10-yr-old XD (I like rainbows, okay :P)

Permission was given to use these photos as publicity. )

Expect a photo-heavy post tomorrow evening of how it goes! :D

Today, disabled campaigner Sue Marsh has released her Report for Responsible Reform -- the 'Spartacus report' -- into the proposed changes to DLA: a report entirely funded by a group of sick and disabled people who I'm proud to count myself as part of.

To quote from the press release to demonstrate why this report is so important:

Among the report’s conclusions:

* Only 7% of organisations that took part in the consultation were fully in support of plans to replace DLA with PIP

* There was overwhelming opposition in the consultation responses to nearly all of the government’s proposals for DLA reform

* The government has consistently used inaccurate figures to exaggerate the rise in DLA claimants

* 98% of those who responded opposed plans to change the qualifying period for PIP from three months (as it is with DLA) to six months

* 90% opposed plans for a new assessment, which disabled people fear will be far too similar to the much-criticised work capability assessment used to test eligibility for employment and support allowance (ESA)

* Respondents to the consultation repeatedly warned that the government’s plans could breach the Equality Act, the Human Rights Act and the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities

The report can be found HERE. Please, especially if you're in the UK, read it. Today, we need to make a lot of noise about it. #spartacusreport is currently trending on Twitter, which is amazing. This has the potential to save lives. People are already dying because of these reforms.

This is important. This is the most important thing you will read today. Please, support us.

Oh.

I'm so disappointed in Jason Momoa right now. (For those of you who don't know, he played Khal Drogo in Game of Thrones, and was recently on a Comic Con panel discussing it.)

"I've never been a part of anything remotely close to this," Momoa says, when asked to compare working on a Sci Fi Channel show to working on an HBO show. He loves that scifi and fantasy shows let you "rip someone's throat out and rape beautiful women."

(Emphasis mine, source here)

That's just...disturbing and disgusting. And no, I don't care if he was joking, that's still an really terrible thing to say. At least everyone else on the panel looked suitably unimpressed.

[livejournal.com profile] thingswithwings  has made a video about MANPAIN in various fandoms, and has written an awesome meta to go with it. Definitely worth reading and watching. (I read the meta before seeing the video, and think it worked best that way around, but could be just me :P)

[livejournal.com profile] proskynesis , I think this will be particularly relavant to your interests.

I've just finished watching the BBC's Sherlock. And I have some thoughts, so I shall proceed to inflict them on you all.
SPOILERS for all three episodes )

Look at that, I'm back from Spain. It was very hot. Well, I was back yesterday evening, but I've been catching up on everything.

--  Apparently I've missed LJ announcing to do something monumentally stupid to do with Facebook. Everyone's talked about this already, so I'll just add my voice to those promising to NEVER cross-post anything of anyones' to Facebook or Twitter.

--  While I was away my father used my not-cheap cake-decorating icing syringe thing (which I didn't buy from a local shop, so can't easily replace) to apply cement mix to the bathroom he's doing up, damaging it beyond repair in the process. Shockingly, I am not happy. Even more shockingly, he doesn't see what the deal is and got angry at me for 'over-reacting'.

--  He's also hinting that I'm not being trite enough over my borderline 2.1/2.2. Guess what, I do care. I'm disappointed that I didn't do better after a term of revision and panic and stress. But I admitted that last summer, so fool me once etc.

--  Trying to get your boyfriend to see things from a feminist (or LGBT) perspective can be rather like slamming your head into a brick wall. And being told off for the incredibly faint possiblity of causing structural damage.

--  If the show 'Huge' does not get a second season I will be very, very upset. It's the best thing I've seen on TV for... well, I can't remember how long. Seriously, go and watch it, or at least read some of the recaps at Fatshionista to get an idea of how awesome it is. And then watch it.

--  I really want a new gen Kindle. So shiny. I've spent today coming up with justifications, like being able to read journal articles in pdf on it, saving on either paper or my eyes, but the truth is that I just love gadgets too much.

--  I owe lots and lots of people fics now. I do have a list, and will probably post it in the next day or so because when you all tell me how bad I am it may inspire me to get the hell on with something which isn't getting angry at posts on [livejournal.com profile] sf_drama  or crocheting more dinosaurs. (On that note I made Esvan a brachiosaurus, but forgot to photograph it and he's gone back to uni now.)

Lastly

--  I've been finding that my icons are pretty badly labelled, so they're hard for me to find and keep track of. Basically, I need to do a mass re-name of them all in a standardised format (ok, ok, so this isn't urgent, but it bugs me like you wouldn't believe), which means that everything except for AtLA icons, which are labelled sensibly since they're the most recently loaded, currently attached to posts or comments will reset to default. I'm sad about this, but I've been putting it off forever. This probably isn't a big (or any sort of) deal to anyone apart from me, but I feel the need to defend doing this anyhow.
