I was taught from Primary school that cursive was the "correct" hand -- we were only allowed to use pencil until our cursive was good enough, and then we were allowed to use fountain pens. Secondary was the same -- it was actually incredibly surprising to get to sixth form and find that most schools were much less strict and didn't do this XD
