I have a lot of DS9 feelings, having devoured most of the show over this summer. I'm now at 6x21...

Julian is my favourite. He is such an adorable puppy. I do admit I probably wouldn't have liked him so much at first if not for That Twitter Crowd continually talking about his adorableness -- I'm very susceptible at being primed by friends to like a character. He's just so melodramatic and snarky and clever and lovely and he has such a great face.

Also he has a spy boyfriend and wants to be a spy himself but is terrible at being a spy.

Jadzia is also my favourite. She's just so ridiculously chilled and casual and a dork and also is way too cool for everyone and knows this very deeply. (I was charmed when in one of the early episodes she was sitting in Ops with her feet up on a console while on duty. It was just so delightfully incongruous for Starfleet.)

Kira is my favourite because she is so smol and she is angry about everything all the time and it's great.

Everyone else is also my favourite because they are all so incredibly cute and I adore them all.

I am delighted by this show, and am actually feeling seriously fannish about it, and I have missed so much feeling fannish about something! Although I have given myself a couple of serious spoilers by being too impatient for fic :( But when I've finished watching it all I will want to read all the fic in the world, especially Julian fic. I am yearning for the type that was incredibly popular in SGA fandom, the "small group of characters are on a random ice/jungle/ocean/desert/fire planet and TERRIBLE THINGS HAPPEN TO THEM for like 10k words" genre. If they don't exist I may need to write them.

(Okay, the episode Starship Down with Julian and Jadzia -- that was basically everything I want. EXCEPT LOTS MORE OF IT.)

Actually, I'm taking fic prompts. Especially from my hc_bingo card. One of the writing blocks I was talking about a while ago definitely comes from the fact that I'm still way into wanting to write and read h/c but most of my friends don't really seem to be into it and I've been feeling definitely really ashamed and childish for it still being my main narrative kink. And this is probably stupid. So prompt me for Julian-centric fics please?

Today on SGA, we reached the episode where John turns into a bug. (It is very seriously boring how sci-fi transformations for men are so often accompanied by attack-snogging the attractive women they work with. Just stop please.)

I have been very bad at writing posts to keep up with the pace of our SGA watching. But we have now got as far as Trinity, so have some out-of-order thoughts on the episodes up to this point.

We have watched several episodes since I last posted, but I have had no or barely functional internet with which to share the results. I'll attempt to catch up.

(Seriously, the last time I had both my proper computer and a reliable non-shit internet connection was early December. This is getting beyond ridiculous and is why I'm so behind with everything DW-related.)

I have finally succeeded in persuading Eleanor to watch Stargate Atlantis. Or, rather, to watch a selection of Stargate Atlantis episodes. When we first kicked this idea around over Christmas we agreed that I would put together a Greatest Hits list -- however, having watched the first four episodes, she is enjoying it enough that we're actually flipping this so we'll instead watch most of the seasons with the worst eps omitted. Entirely subjectively according to Frith, of course.

Having been aware of SGA fandom through her fandoms, and from hearing me talk about it (I think she's also read some fic), she was adamant that I include both the lemon chicken episode and the episode where John turns into a bug. I'm happy to oblige in this, obviously.

Thus far we have watched S1 episodes Rising 1 & 2, Hide and Seek, and Thirty-Eight Minutes.

Reactions - mine and hers )

I am feeling so much fandom nostalgia now! Also I am really really tempted to see if I can justify buying a paid account just so I can have some of my SGA icons back again XD
frith_in_thorns: Diana Berrigan in a winter coat, looking down and smiling (WC Diana)
In this post: White Collar S5 squee! This has probably been my favourite season so far -- it's so deconstructive and meta, and has delved so well into the characters.

I have been missing Diana, of course, but I also support non-judged maternity leave, so I shall content myself with bouncing in delight at the bits of her we've had.

I'm not even very good at writing reaction posts, but I wanted to register my incoherent squee. Join me in happiness!

SPOILERS UP TO LATEST EPISODE (5X12). NO SPOILERS FROM 5X13 OR PROMOS PLEASE!

PLEASE NO HARSHING. (Especially if you feel that Peter's a terrible person -- please, not in this post?)

December meme. (I haven't started at the top of the list, as some of the topics require me to get my thoughts much more in order than they currently are! But I shall get to them all.)

Since bringing Merlin to its ridiculous end, the BBC has clearly been needing to fill that Saturday early-evening timeslot with more shirtless men, historical anachronisms, mangling of myths and legends, and shirtless men. Judging just from its first episode, Atlantis seems to be filling this in an exemplary fashion. Certainly, Eleanor and I enjoyed it very much — possibly even more than Merlin, not least as this time we have no high expectations of it actually making any sense.

I thought I would recap, primarily for my own amusement. Hopefully it will amuse you too. (The main emotion this show has so far inspired in us is helpless giggling.)

frith_in_thorns: (NY - Stella - smile red)
Reasons why I am in love with Warehouse 13 (I am up to the beginning of season 4):

  • Loads of female characters, who continue to show up and attach themselves to the cast.

  • All of these women are well-developed and very different, and they all have deep and different friendships with each other. And talk to each other. A lot.

  • Actually, this show is majorly driven by women.

  • This is a world in which queer people exist, and queerness is casually mentioned. There is a main character and a recurring character who are unambiguously queer (gay and bi respectively), and more than that, minor characters and historical characters are queer and this is mentioned in passing but not as a Thing. (Example: the password to an artifact was the name of the male inventor's lover, Thomas.)

  • Dates in the past are referred to with BCE.

  • Mark Sheppard is in it playing a recurring character who is powerful and morally ambiguous.

  • One episode contained a spiel about how awesome Rosalind Franklin was and how Watson and Crick had piggybacked onto her work while she didn't get the Nobel recognition that they did.

  • The setup and the plots are utterly ridiculous. And the show realises that it's utterly ridiculous and just goes along with it having fun.

minor spoilers for the beginning of S2 )

  • This is actually the short version of the list. The longer would would involve listing pretty much everything that Myka and Claudia and HG ever do.

  • I LOVE THIS SHOW A LOT OKAY.

Hi! Welcome to the first part of the Avatar: the Last Airbender watch/rewatch, hosted by [livejournal.com profile] sholio and myself. There will be a post each week, and then we watch two episodes (20 minutes each) and discuss/squee in the comments.

Book 1 Episodes 1: The Boy In The Iceberg & 2: The Avatar Returns

In which there are penguin-otters (seriously, they are the cutest, I want one), Katara is a bb waterbender, Sokka is really brave, Zuko is looking for his honour, and there is a boy in an iceberg.

Soooo, yesterday evening I sat down to type up some of my November fic, and put Elementary on in the background because I had been meaning to get around to watching it. And then I accidentally most of the aired episodes, and barely any typing up. Oops.

I have also now written half a meta about the many ways Elementary is very good and worlds less infuriating than Moffat's Sherlock (which has been putting me off any and all versions of Holmes for the last year). And I love love love Joan Watson to bits.

A reaction I got to posting this on Facebook was "But Elementary has no gay". Moffat's Sherlock did not have gay in it. It had incessive and offensive queerbaiting capped hastily each time with LOL NO HOMO. The fan subtext does not make this gay-friendly. It doesn't make the commentary by Moffat and BC less awful.

I came across a quote in an article/blog post a while back -- I cannot for the life of me remember where, but chances are it was from s.e. smith or one of the articles posted on the stfu_moffat tumblr. It said something along the lines of: "It's actually astonishing that vigorously-denied subtext between two white male leads is seen as being more progressive than a Watson played by a WoC." That is all.

-

I have also been catching up on this series of Merlin, where the writers have apparently decided that running the exact same multi-ep arc with a different principal three different times wasn't enough. *facepalms, giggling* Also most of the 'plot' still hinges on character A not telling character B the important information which would allow it to be resolved with in five minutes. Although this season has not had a tournament episode yet, so I should probably give some credit for that...

In other news, Gwen continues to be gorgeous, Merlin continues to be extremely woobie, and the geography in and around Camelot continues to make no sense whatsoever. (Morgana's remarkably similar ambush in the exact same glade at the beginning of two episodes in a row has been my absolute favourite example of this. Oh show, you really are incredibly stupid. But very pretty.)

I can't really be too sad about this show being cancelled. It's terrible (this fact is freely admitted by its fans) and it's had a five-year run. But you have to love a show so blatant with its "if the pretty men take off their shirts all the time, maybe viewers won't notice quite so many plotholes!" I shall definitely miss it. Hopefully the BBC will come up with something else as ridiculous and pretty to put in that timeslot. Suggestions?
frith_in_thorns: (White Collar - Neal+Peter - table)
We now have a complete house: Celia moved in a few days ago. One of the first things she asked was, "So, when do I start watching White Collar?" She also wants to watch Avatar: tLA.

So far the three of us are getting along as housemates WONDERFULLY.

We introduced her to White Collar with the summer finale, which [livejournal.com profile] theoret has continued to bring us in our internet-less exile. Theo did not see the reveal coming. I did. [livejournal.com profile] helle_d did. Celia did. *gg* It was a good episode, although hard to write tags to. (Priorities!)

Celia also ships Peter/Neal already. Or, as she put it, "But I don't even have to! The show's doing it for me!" Then we watched the first two eps of AtLA, which she also loved. She has very good taste, clearly :D

And now there is no White Collar until January, which is extremely sad (Theo: "I would genuinely let myself be covered in ants if it stopped White Collar going on hiatus!"), although helle and I have already agreed we will keep up TV Wednesdays with Theo, as it's a lot of fun. Theo's talking us into watching Teen Wolf. We may regret this.

At some point in the evening I ended up promising Theo and Eleanor that I would write them a post-anklet bakery 'verse. So I guess this is now a thing I'm working on?

In news that isn't about TV shows, well, not much else interesting is happening in my life. I'm still looking for a job. I've been playing a lot of Skyrim. Also, even the incredibly slow and unreliable mobile internet I've been depending on in the house seems to have (hopefully temporarily) gone down. I have full phone signal, but no internet for the past few days. Woe. I'm about five fics behind on my big bang reading now, not to mention everything else people are posting, and I feel like a bad friend. Twelve days to go until we're supposed to get the actual internet connected...

Dear H50 writers,

I do appreciate the colour-coding, since you're using the same shooting locations. North Korea is certainly well-known for its undersaturation, after all.

Dear self,

You're supposed to be packing your stuff up. Or, tidying your stuff up and then packing it. You've spent half the day sitting in the field writing fic and the other half watching H50 and crocheting. STOP IT.

No love.
